About the Swedish Prison and Probation Service

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is growing – we are building new facilities, renovating, and expanding, and we are now looking for more employees. Our most important goal is to reduce recidivism – to break the vicious cycle. If we succeed, society will become safer and more secure for everyone. We are the agency responsible for prisons, probation, remand prisons, and client transport.

Job Description

As a prison officer at a prison, you are the foundation of security work and are part of a team where you have daily contact with the client. The daily work involves locking and unlocking residential rooms, searching premises, and surveillance, as well as conversation and preparation for release. The role of a prison officer involves a structured and routine-based approach with risk assessment and security awareness in focus. Working at a remand prison means focusing on care and security and is a job with clear routines. Some people are held in pre-trial detention for long periods and only meet their lawyer and those who work at the remand prison. This places special demands on you as a prison officer.

Working as a prison officer means that you can make a difference for other people and contribute to a better society. To thrive and succeed in your assignment, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that humans are capable of development.

You start your employment at the workplace where you receive an introduction during three weeks. After a few months of service, we plan when you will start the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's mandatory basic training. The training lasts eight weeks and takes place during paid working hours and is both physical and theoretical, so we also require good health. Assessment takes place continuously before the probationary period turns into a permanent position after six months.

Qualifications

Your personal qualities are important. As a prison officer, you need to be secure, stable, have good self-awareness, good judgment, and integrity. Together with your colleagues, you drive the operations, so you need to have good cooperation skills and be clear in your communication. You must be able to act physically when required.

For us, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's basic values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief in human will and ability to develop. You are also aware of and understand how background, culture, and group affiliation affect yourself and others. Furthermore, you are expected to contribute through your attitude to ensure that everyone is treated equally. We place great emphasis on personal suitability.

We are looking for someone who has:

• Completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
• Work experience, also in the form of seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not to be equated with employment
• Good knowledge of the Swedish language in both speech and writing
• Good computer skills

The following are also meritorious:

• Work experience from the prison and probation service, security work, social care, psychiatry, or care and nursing work
• Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
• Relevant language skills
• Category B driver's license

Other

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has chosen to remove the personal letter and replaced it with selection questions that are relevant to the position. The answers to the selection questions and the CV form the basis for whether you are qualified to proceed in the process.

To be considered for employment within the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, you must meet high requirements regarding suitability, judgment, security and confidentiality awareness, and that you follow applicable laws. Some positions are placed in security classes, and a security investigation with register control will be conducted before a decision on employment is made.
